Twitter has become a popular communications tool for all kinds of organizations, including colleges. The social networking platform is popular for real-time news and short conversations (the character limit for a tweet is 140).
Here are some ideas for different Twitter accounts your school may benefit from by creating:
• Main Twitter account for the college
• Individual campus accounts
• Different departments throughout the college (i.e. Career Services, Student Accounts, Admissions, and Financial Aid)
• By program/industry
• Student council or leadership groups
Whether your college has one main Twitter account or accounts for each campus, department, and/or organization depends on your school’s overall social media and online strategy. Your college’s main Twitter account should integrate content from all Twitter accounts officially associated with your school. For example, if one of your campuses in Alaska cancels classes due to extreme weather conditions, that should be tweeted from the Alaska campus’ Twitter account and from the college’s main Twitter account.
It is recommended that before creating all sorts of different Twitter accounts for your college that your main account is well established. That will help in the efforts to expand your school’s Twitter and online presence.
